I am enthusiastic about Nature Photography since
childhood, following in the footsteps of my older brother, when I discovered
the details of small animals using the first SLR macro equipment. Then, about twenty
years old, in the 80s, I discovered Diving and underwater photography and never
left. I have always continued this activity together with the Medical
Profession, for what have published and presented scientific researches in
national and international events. Taking pictures of nature, insects, birds,
fish and everything else, is a way to learn more about them: the still image
shows the details of the bodies making appreciate unimaginable particulars,
each time discovering something new. For underwater photography I have been to
many tropical seas, but (may sound odd) my preference is for the Mediterranean,
where every day discoveries are spectacular and unexpected and only photography
can make us truly appreciate. The artistic taste in photography is certainly an
important factor in this activity, but I think it is very difficult to add
something aesthetically pleasing to the natural environment: what I try to
achieve is the best interpretation a of it's reality . In recent years my
photographic passion had a strong improvement with the advent of digital: while
regretting the film and the dark room where I spent many hours, the ability to
adjust, correct and improve the frame allows the achievement of the result with
much more ease, especially in nature photography, where there is the
opportunity to optimize the shots and where the subjects are not collaborating.
I have published in magazines, my photos have been used in educational
publications, on different websites and are used in posters and calendars.
Lately I'm taking part as a photographer in a medical experiment of hyperbaric medicine made on a large group of divers. My

didactical section for underwater photography that can be reached also by
typing www.guidafotografiasubacquea.it. I
founded a Facebook group called “Guida alla Fotografia Subacquea” where uw
photographers can put pictures, asking questions and give their opinion. I am
engaged in courses where I try to share my knowledge and acquire other.
Finally, I am also interested in the History of underwater photography, I'm member of the Historical Diving Society
Italy for which I wrote articles and possess a wide collection of vintage
cameras underwater, also published and commented on my site. My technique in
diving is following DIR directions: developed for cave diving, is one of the
best for saving the environment, taking photo correctly and safety.

pictures in the best way. Stefania is a professional model with
which I made my best portrait.
Equipment: after leaving film DSLR cameras and Nikonos
several years ago, I have used, and sometimes still use, Nikon d200, D300S
(APS-C), now my DSLRs are d800 and d810 (full frame). For reasons of
reliability and universality I designed and built an aluminum housing for these
cameras. The realization, obtained by CNC machining from solid, was treated for
the processing to CAD by Maurizio Ulisse, which I work with in the nascent
photovideo and underwater lighting company ULIXES. For lighting I prefer the
flash Subtronic and Sea & Sea professional series, and more and more I am
turning to continuous illumination with high power
LED illuminators Ulixes for which I'm testing the prototypes.
Mi sono appassionato alla Fotografia Naturalistica fin da bambino,
seguendo le orme di mio fratello più grande, quando scoprivo i particolari
delle forme di vita utilizzando le prime attrezzature macro reflex. Poi, ventenne,
negli anni '80, ho scoperto la Subacquea e la Fotosub e non l'ho più lasciata.
Ho affiancato sempre questa attività a quella della Professione Medica, dove
anche in questo campo ho pubblicato e presentato relazioni scientifiche in
ambito nazionale ed internazionale. Per me fotografare la natura,
insetti, uccelli, pesci e quant'altro, rappresenta un modo per approfondirne la
conoscenza: l'immagine ferma evidenzia i particolari degli organismi facendone
apprezzare particolari inimmaginabili, scoprendo ogni volta qualcosa di nuovo.
Per la Fotosub sono stato in molti mari tropicali, ma (può sembrare strano) la
mia predilezione è per il Mediterraneo, dove ogni giorno le scoperte sono
spettacolari e inaspettate e solo la fotografia può farcele apprezzare veramente.
L'aspetto artistico della fotografia naturalistica è senz'altro un fattore
importante in questa disciplina, ma ritengo che sia molto difficile aggiungere
qualcosa di esteticamente valido all'ambiente naturale: quello che mi sforzo di
ottenere è la migliore interpretazione e traduzione in immagine di questo. In
questi ultimi anni la mia attività fotografica ho avuto una decisa impennata di
passione con l'avvento del digitale: pur rimpiangendo le pellicole e la camera
oscura dove ho passato tantissime ore, la possibilità di regolare, correggere e
migliorare l'inquadratura permette il raggiungimento del risultato con molta
più facilità , specialmente nella fotografia naturalistica, dove non c'è la
possibilità di pianificare e ottimizzare le inquadrature e dove i soggetti non
sono certo collaboranti. Ho pubblicato su riviste del settore, la mie foto sono
state utilizzate in pubblicazioni didattiche e divulgative, su diversi siti
internet e sono utilizzate in poster e calendari. Sono impegnato in corsi dove
cerco di condividere le mie conoscenze e acquisirne altre. Infine, sono
appassionato anche di Storia della Fotosub, sono iscritto alla Historical
Diving Society Italia e posseggo una vasta collezione di apparecchi fotografici
subacquei, anch'essa pubblicata e commentata su questo sito.
Ho fondato di recente un gruppo Facebook "Guida alla
Fotografia Subacquea" dove i fotosub possono postare domande e contributi
su tecnica, composizione, storia e quant'altro possa essere utile allo sviluppo
dell'attività .

Stefania Mensa, che è anche la mia principale modella, e Simone Nicolini con
tutto il loro staff rendono possibile il mio lavoro. La mia tecnica subacquea
in questi ultimi tempi si è avvicinata alla metodica DIR, quest'ultima
inizialmente concepita per le immersioni in grotta, è sicuramente molto utile
ai fini della fotografia per la cura dell'assetto, il rispetto dell'ambiente e
la sicurezza.
Attrezzatura: Ho utilizzato in passato, e talvolta ancora
utilizzo, Nikon d200, d300, d300s (APS-C), ora le mia reflex digitali sono le
d800-810 (full frame). Per motivi di affidabilità e universalità ho progettato
e costruito una custodia in alluminio per queste ultime fotocamere. La
realizzazione, ottenuta da fresatura CNC dal pieno, è stata curata per la
elaborazione al CAD da Maurizio Ulisse, con cui collaboro per la nascente
azienda di produzione di illuminazione fotovideo subacquea ULIXES. Per
l'illuminazione prediligo i flash Subtronic e Sea&Sea della serie
professionale, e sempre di più mi sto orientando verso l'illuminazione continua
con illuminatori ad alta potenza LED della Ulixes di cui sto testando i prototipi.
